Corporate Social Responsibility

Philanthropy and corporate social responsibility are enduring hallmarks of the Kewalram Chanrai Group since it started. The Group believes that philanthropy teaches succeeding generations important lessons on social responsibility, and offers an opportunity to create a better world. It is a deeply satisfying activity that reinforces our sense of purpose and direction. The Group also encourages employees to get involved in and contribute to the various community outreach projects that it initiates and supports.

In 1973, former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi inaugurated the Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre in Mumbai, a world-class facility. It was named after Lokumal Chanrai and his wife, Jasoti. A third of its hospital beds are free, while another third is subsidised. Concessions are given to the young as well as elderly.

True to its vision of responsible business and giving back to the community in which it operates, the Group also provides healthcare, education and medical facilities for the underprivileged in several countries. This expresses our values and concerns.

In Malaysia, KCG initiated the Jaipur Foot programme in 2003. It is a scheme that provides free prosthetic legs to handicapped individuals and to date, it has benefitted more than 200 Malaysians.

In partnership with the Tulsi Chanrai Foundation, the Group has set up anti-malaria and health care programmes in the Adamawa state of Nigeria, which comprises over 40 rural community health centres providing subsidised drugs and ante- and post-natal services to a population of about 24,000. The Yola Primary Health Project in Nigeria was inaugurated by his Royal Highness, Lamido of Adamawa, Dr Aliyu Musdafa in 2006.

The Kewalram Chanrai Group recognises that small amounts of well placed aid matter and can make a difference to the world.
